Wolfia AI generates answers by combining your organization’s knowledge with customizable settings. You can control both what the AI focuses on and how it writes.
Two types of customization
| Setting | What it controls | Scope |
|---|
| Editorial Guide | How answers are written (tone, voice, formatting) | Organization-wide |
| Questionnaire Instructions | What content is emphasized (frameworks, scope, detail level) | Per-questionnaire with org defaults |
These settings control how answers are written, not which facts are used. For information about how Wolfia chooses which facts to include, see How Wolfia prioritizes facts.
Editorial Guide
The Editorial Guide defines your organization’s voice. It applies to all AI-generated answers across questionnaires and conversations.
What it controls:
- Tone and voice (professional vs conversational, first-person vs third-person)
- Formatting preferences (bullet points vs paragraphs, response length)
- Terminology standards (company name usage, abbreviations)
Example: “Use formal, third-person voice. Always use ‘Acme Corporation’ instead of ‘we.’”
See the full Editorial Guide documentation for setup steps and examples.
Questionnaire Instructions
Questionnaire Instructions tell Wolfia what to focus on when answering questions. You can set organization-wide defaults that auto-populate for new questionnaires, then customize per-questionnaire as needed.
What it controls:
- Compliance framework alignment (SOC 2, ISO, NIST)
- Scope restrictions (cloud-only, specific products)
- Detail level (executive summaries vs technical deep-dives)
Example: “This is a SOC 2 audit. Reference control categories (CC6.1, CC6.2, etc.).”
See the full Questionnaire Instructions documentation for setup steps and examples.
How customizations interact
Your settings work together in a clear priority order:
1. Your corrections (always highest priority)
2. Manual facts
3. Questionnaire Instructions (content focus)
4. Editorial Guide (writing style)
5. Knowledge base facts
Example: You have a SOC 2 questionnaire with instructions saying “Reference control categories.” Your Editorial Guide says “Use formal, third-person voice.” Wolfia will produce SOC 2-focused answers with control category references, written in formal third-person voice.

Getting started
Both settings are available on a single page with tabs:
- Go to Settings → AI customization — This page has two tabs: Editorial guide and Questionnaire instructions
- Set your Editorial Guide — On the Editorial guide tab, define your organization’s voice
- Configure default Questionnaire Instructions — On the Questionnaire instructions tab, set organization-wide defaults
- Review and iterate — Check answers and refine your settings based on the results
Start simple with 2-3 preferences, then add more specificity as you see what needs adjustment.
